The Downfall of a Champ : Ronda Rousey

MMA UFC193 Rousey vs Holm
Lets talk about that Ronda Rousey situation you know the one where she got ko'ed by a head kick and lost her championship belt. The same situation where a calm and patient Holly Holm took the belt in the second round and looked like she didn't even break a sweat. Let's talk about the multiple factors here that helped lead to the downfall of Ronda Rousey.

First of all let's talk about Ronda Rouseys' coach the same guy who said that her boxing was on par or better than Holly Holms. Yes the same guy who was in her corner in telling her that she is doing great after her first round where she was repeatedly out struck and countered multiple times during the first round. Possibly even telling her that she should continue boxing with Holly Holm to prove that her boxing was better than the former boxing champion. Yes I know bit of fans are going to crucify this guy for the things that he said prior, during, and
after this fight. But can anybody really be mad at us for criticizing everything that he said so far. Should we be mad at all, that her coach gave her terrible advice? Possibly. Even if she would have won would we as fans say "Hey that was a clean, technical, and tactical boxing display by the champion!" We think not. But here's a sample of what the coach of Ronda Rousey had to say :

"The game plan was pressing," Tarverdyan told ESPN. "We knew Holly Holm was going to keep the distance. So we had to feint and get inside and pressure the right way so we can get on the side of the cage. And we've talked about that and Holly Holm did a good job with moving today and stayed calm."

"I wouldn't say in the striking game she was getting the best of Ronda, you know, but I have to watch it again. But we know this was not a striking match; we know that Ronda is smart enough to take the fight where she is best at and today she did. Holly stopped an attempt on an armbar and stopped some of the takedowns. She did a good job."

Ultimately, Edmond revealed that Rousey will take some time off before she contemplates the next step in her career.

"[Ronda] apologized to me -- and I told her that you are still the best and we'll talk about what the plans are after she rests," Tarverdyan said. "Certainly the girl needs rest. It's not easy to deal with everything she has been dealing with. She needs time to rest, and after she rests we'll figure out what is best for her career."

Second lets factor in the fact that Ronda Rouseys' schedule seems to be filled with a lot of different opportunities and other distractions now a days more than fighting. She was recently talking about becoming a champion boxer. As of right now we don't think that's going to happen anytime soon. But even things like the multiple commercials and the movie roles that she's been taking on seem to have been taken her focus away from the sport. With the schedule like that How does someone who is supposed to be a champion actually put all their time and effort into staying the champion? She was quoted as saying :

“After this fight I’m definitely going to let some people miss me, for sure,” Rousey in an interview with RollingStone.com. “Believe me, there’s nothing I would like to do more than disappear for a while. … I would like to wait until UFC 200 to fight again. I’m going to be filming (movies) in the meantime, so I’m still going to be keeping busy.”

And then finally it seems that the interest in the whole sport has been taken a nosedive for the former champion as she's even been talking about retirement. And with talk like that it doesn't seem like a champion is intent on holding their belt for that much longer especially when they're making so much money already. Do the distractions, opportunities and amount of money that a champion make really factor into something like such a tremendous downfall of such a dominant champion? But what can we expect from a champion that has been dominant for so long with very few challenges left to her title. Could regaining that title and then becoming dominant again be another challenge that this champion needs to refocus herself? Or could this be another version of deja vu of where is the champion becomes dominant again until faced with another well prepared highly contested Challenger? And yes we mean Cyborg.
