Should 'Cyborg' Santos Get Her own UFC Division After UFC Fight Night 95 : Brasilia?
Written by A.G Lee
We all just watched the complete domination of Lina Lansberg (6-2) at UFC Fight Night 95 in Brazil by 'Cyborg' Santos and we have to say we were impressed.
But how could we not be impressed or not expect the outcome of that fight as Cristiane 'Cyborg' Justino (17-1, 1 NC) has been dominant in almost all of her career?
Defeating her opponents in major ways and especially Gina Carano which in all reality was what probably sent the former champion off to acting. We have all been waiting for Ronda Rousey to come back and finally fight after her unexpected loss to Holly Holm at UFC 193 that shook up the whole entire women's MMA world via a head kick that led to Rouseys' TKO loss.
Before that Ronda Rousey has always stated that if cyborg wanted to fight her she had to drop down to 135 pounds to come fight. Ever since then 'Cyborg' has been training and working with the best in weight loss coaching that she can find to drop down to 135.
So far that hasn't gone too well as the lowest that she's been able to drop down to is 139 pounds in her first fight against Leslie Smith in the UFC at the weigh-ins of UFC 198. At that weigh in she looked drained and even had an episode backstage where she fell to the ground crying.
At UFC Fight Night 95 in Brazil there were no episodes of her falling to the ground and she didn't look normal but she also came in at 141 which is 4 pounds under where she naturally fights at Invicta FC. With Ronda Rousey gone on her hiatus, Cyborg has still been trying to fulfill the 135 pound experiment which fans are now saying seems a bit unnecessary.
So far she's not going to get down below 139 lbs and Ronda Rousey has been gone long enough we're 'Cyborg' Santos has been showing MMA fans that she is the dominant force in women's MMA. There is a reason why she has been put on two UFC cards headlining this last one in Brazil and that's because the UFC knows that she is a draw.
If she continues to be a draw, she might be the new face of women's MMA regardless of how much of a push that MMA fans have against how she looks. And with enough drawing power wouldn't that give her the leverage and the power to push the UFC to finally implement the 145 pound featherweight division into the UFC the same way they did the strawweight division?
Yes. The same way that they brought over the whole strawweight division from Invicta FC for their tournament at TUF, they can do the same thing in this instance. Not only will that be a viable option, but also a lot of 135 pound women fighters are cutting too much weight to fight at bantamweight and giving them the 145-pound division would also give them that option to actually move up in a fight at a more natural weight for them.
It's getting more and more easy to accept the fact that Cristiane 'Cyborg' Justino is the new face of women's MMA in terms of dominance and even people like Joe Rogan are calling for the UFC to make the 145 women's division.
.@ufc please open up a 145lbs division for @criscyborg. Her torturing herself to make 140 is insane and she's incredibly entertaining.— Joe Rogan (@joerogan) September 25, 2016
So the whole question left there is: Why not? Why feature a fighter who is the champion of a sister company to the UFC on the main card or even give them a fight in their organisation if they do not have a long-term plan for this type of fighter?
It seems that implementing such a female MMA Legend into the company with her own division would not be a bad idea at all, because as we have seen a new division needs a dominant champion to get it going and more. Just look at Ronda Rousey and Demetrious Johnson and how their divisions fared drawing power wise with their respective champions and why Ian McCall was given such a big push in the beginning.
