UFC 229 : You know Who Really Threw The First Punch

Written by A.G Lee

Apparently there's still a lot of fighting going on between fans of current Undisputed light weight champion khabib number the metal and former to division Champions Conor McGregor after UFC 229. But rightfully so considering how much of an impact the fight had on fan and on the division.

The biggest topic of UFC 229 is not about the fight that happened in the cage between the two rivals but the fight that happened outside of the cage. Yes we're talking about the massive brawl that broke out after UFC lightweight champion khabib Nurmagomedov submitted Conor McGregor with a neck crank.

Considering that Conor McGregor has so far lived up to his notorious moniker it would be reasonable and easy to assume that Conor McGregor should somehow be in the wrong for this and actually threw the first punch. And by looking at videos onlineas we have all seen them it would seem justified.

But if we watch all of the videos from every angle we will as MMA fans realize that Conor McGregor never threw the first punch in this brawl.

Why you ask? The simple but very obvious answer of self-defense. Yes it might be a little tough to imagine where Conor McGregor would be defending himself that he would need to punch a teammate of Khabib first who was also on the cage with him.

The part that MMA fans are seeming to forget in the technicality and definition of self-defense is that it also applies to defending other people. To Conor McGregor those other people included and involved his cornermen (some who are more than just training partners) who were attacked first by UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Let's imagine this scenario. You are outside smoking a cigarette and your family members are inside of restaurants. A crazy man runs out from his car into the restaurant and starts attacking people including your family members.

You start running in the door but his associate runs out of the car and gets into the doorway the same time as you. Do you stop his associate from also running in to attack the people in the store including your family members? Or do you allow them to run in thinking they are going to do something else less sinister? Think about that one really really deeply for a second.

Because barring the fact that there was security and police there do you as a person allowed another attacker to enter the fight? Yes it might be a complex scenario, but a scenario that can be sorted out by law with more ease than the moral tie ups would allow.

By the simple use and Technical definition of self-defense Conor McGregor was not in the wrong here as weird as that might sound. As he had every right to defend his cornerman from whatever attacks might be already outside the ring or coming from inside the ring. Especially when one of the people "punched first" has already made a threat to fight you anyways.

To some it might just look like Conor McGregor attacking people for no reason, but the post-fight brawl at UFC 229 was not the case.

We Hate to be the Devil's Advocate on this one but blame needs to go where blame needs to go especially when a champion acts completely out of hand especially when we consider them or expect them to uphold themselves as they always have up until a point like this.

Yes Conor McGregor took it too far as usual on the lead up to any of his fights by insulting almost everything he possibly could about Khabib Nurmagomedov, from his family, his people, his religion, his father and more. Yes he deserved to answer for his words and his actions, but that retaliation is supposed to happen in the cage when it includes two fighters of their caliber and the organization they represent and as we all saw at UFC 229 in most aspects it did.

Out of all the fighters in the UFC roster this was nothing that any MMA fan possibly would have expected from and always stand up a respectful fighters such as khabib nurmagomedov and this does unfortunately leave a black eye on the sport.

Even worse is the UFC might end up losing one of its most dominant a lightweight champions due to completely uncharacteristic actions taken In the heat of the moment. But even with that MMA fans should learn to put the blame where it actually needs to go and that lies with Khabib Nurmagomedov unfortunately.
